Welcome to the 2013 - 2014 school year! In English class this year the focus will be on developing the students' writing skills. The class will incorporate spelling, vocabulary, grammar and writing conventions. Homework will be assigned for the week on Mondays. It will also be displayed on this website. Week of November 12th, 2013: MIDTERM STUDY GUIDES
7th Grade:
1. List the eight parts of speech.
2. What are the three elements of good writing? SPA
3. What are the three types of writing? Explain each type.
4. Explain the difference between fact and opinion. Answer must be in sentence form.
5. Write two elevated sentences using the current wordmaster words.
6. Spelling: Words will come from the spelling rule "I before E except after C" and the rule on words ending in silent e and adding a suffix.
7. Conjugate: Present tense regular verb
8. Subject/Verb agreement will be identified in the conjugation.
9. Matching a word with a definition. The words are person, number, gender, and case.
10. Give an example of the following types of nouns. The nouns are common, proper, concrete and abstract.
11. Be able to identify complete subjects/predicates and also simple subjects/predicates.
12. Mark and diagram a declarative sentence with adjectives, adverbs and prepositional phrases.
8th Grade:

Week of September 30th, 2013:
7th Grade:
Development of elevated sentences with the class vocabulary and the thesaurus; Quiz on function identification in a declarative sentence with diagrams; Worksheet on identifying the purpose of the writer for homework; A test on purpose; Spelling Test October 1st; Analogy Test on October 2nd.
8th Grade: Review the compound sentence with a coordinating conjunction homework and class worksheets for a written test; Study for spelling test October 1st; Study for analogy test October 2nd; Complete the rough draft and the final typed paragraph; A grade will be given for both; Study for a diagramming test on the four kinds of sentences.

Week of September 23rd, 2013:
7th Grade:
Development of elevated sentences from the class vocabulary; Quiz on the marking and diagramming of a subject, a verb, adjectives, adverbs and prepositional phrases in declarative sentences; A worksheet on identifying the purpose of the writer; A test on purpose; Study for the spelling test on October 1st; Study for analogy test on October 2nd.
8th Grade: Complete the worksheet on compound sentences connected by a coordinating conjunction; A test will follow this exercise on compound sentences with the class vocabulary; Complete the rough draft for your informative paragraph.
